What to Wear for a Photoshoot in Scotland: Family, Maternity & Portrait Outfit Guide
This is one of the most common questions I get before a session, and honestly, it’s also one of the most overthought.
Because the goal isn’t perfection. It’s comfort, confidence, and coordination (not matching outfits from head to toe).
Please remember -
Wear something you feel like yourself in.
If you’re uncomfortable, it shows in photos immediately.
Colours that always work well
You can’t really go wrong with:
neutrals (cream, beige, white)
earthy tones (brown, rust, olive)
soft blues and muted greens
These tend to photograph beautifully in natural Scottish light.
What to avoid
big logos or branding
neon colours
overly busy patterns
everyone wearing identical outfits
HOWEVER, if colourful trousers or your favourite patterned Yaks are more 'you' and you'd like that represented in the photographs, absolutely go for it. I love colour!
But generally-
For families
Think coordinated, not matching.
For example:
one neutral base tone
one or two accent colours
different textures (knits, linen, denim)
For maternity sessions
Flowy fabrics work beautifully because they:
move naturally
photograph softly
help you feel comfortable
The most important thing
You don’t need a “Pinterest perfect” outfit - you just need to feel like you!
